The Drums – The Drums EP

Genre: Indie Pop, Post-Punk
Year: 2009
Location: Brooklyn, NY
Label: Twenty Seven Records
MySpace

01. Best Friend
02. Let’s Go Surfing
03. I Felt Stupid
04. I’ll Never Drop My Sword
05. Submarine
06. Down By The Water
07. Me and the Moon
08. Instruct Me

I remember downloading this exactly six months ago, and barely listening to it. What a mistake that was. With a fun mix of indie pop melodies and post-punk riffs, Brooklyn’s The Drums put you in a bright state of mind. It seems that this was never an official release, but they did release their first official EP “Summertime!” in late 2009. I’ll post that once I can get my hands on it.

Mystery of Two – Mystery of Two

Genre: Experimental, Post-Punk, Indie Rock, Shoegaze
Year: 2009
Location: Cleveland, OH
Label: Exit Stencil Recordings
MySpace

01. Gravity
02. Repeat It
03. French Rocking Horse
04. The Spark Is Sweet
05. Reprise It
06. Morning’s Call
07. Swimming
08. Middle of a Field
09. Strange Town
10. Free Fall

Much like a newspaper and political candidate, The Noise Is throws their full support behind Cleveland’s Mystery Of Two. I had heard much about them over the internet waves, but I had never heard their music before. So I made a trip to the record store and picked up their self-titled LP without hearing any of their music. I made an excellent call. When I first started listening to them, I wrote on my personal twitter, “Mystery Of Two sounds like a mix of Devo and Sonic Youth. I’m really liking it. Good job Exit Stencil.” They get thrown under the experimental genre, which really doesn’t make sense except for one thing, Ryan Weitzel’s voice. He throws his dramatic baritone over post-punky rhythms, along with charging shoegaze breakdowns. So more story time, a few hours before my radio show at school, my co-host bailed one me. I had enough music to make up for his absence, but I wanted to have something special in the show. So the first thing that popped into my mind was an on-air interview, and the first band I thought of was my newly-discovered trio, Mystery Of Two. So I got a hold of Ryan, and he agreed to the interview. Long story short, the interview went incredibly well, and I could not have been happier. Mystery Of Two are one of the seven bands playing the pre-Christmas holiday show at Beachland. Just one more reason to get away from your family and see some great music! Pick up this record from Cleveland’s own Exit Stencil Recordings.

Songs – Songs

Genre: Post-Punk, Indie Rock
Year: 2009
Location: Sydney Australia
Label: Popfrenzy
MySpace

01. Farmacy
02. Something To Believe In
03. Oh No
04. Retreat
05. Clouds
06. Different Light
07. Out With A Curse
08. Pain
09. It’s Dry
10. It Doesn’t Exist
11. Just An Idea
12. My Number

Songs are a Sydney-based band that do what they do best, simple post-punk. Their self-titled debut doesn’t do anything too fancy, but it’s done in a perfect fashion. “Different Light” was the track that really attractived them to me, just super catchy lively post-punk. They are signed to Australian label Popfrenzy, along with many other artists including Black Mountain, Ponytail, and Throw Me The Statue.

Arctic Monkeys – Cornerstone EP

Genre: Post-Punk, Indie Rock
Year: 2009
Location: Sheffield, UK
Label: Domino
MySpace

01. Cornerstone
02. Catapult
03. Sketchhead
04. Fright Lined Dining Room

I almost look forward to Arctic Monkeys’ four-song EPs as much as their albums, as many in past have been more than good. I’m glad that “Cornerstone” was the chosen single, as it is definitely one of the best tracks off Humbug. As for the b-sides, they are noticeably fun tracks with clever lyrics and dark post-punky riffs throughout. The biggest standouts are the weaving bass lines on “Catapult”, and drummer Matt Helders’ completely showing off in “Sketchhead”.

Meth Teeth – Everything Went Wrong

Genre: Indie Rock, Post-Punk, Noise, Lo-fi
Year: 2009
Location: Portland, OR
Label: Woodsist Records
MySpace

01. Never Been To Church
02. World Is Going To End Soon
03. This Is Not My Home
04. Unemployment Forever
05. I Was Wrong
06. False Summer
07. People Will Say Anything
08. A Thousand Regrets
09. Failures Selected By God
10. My Heart’s Heart

Back in my Real Estate post, I mentioned how Woodsist Records was a loaded lo-fi label. Well it only gets better with Meth Teeth, making Woodsist one of my favorite labels this year. These Portland, OR natives bump out some noisy lo-fi, with fuzzy post-punk, and a nice touch of indie pop in the mix. I loved the way their album review from their label put it, “Ultra catchy summertime rockers keep you sad and lonely, and upbeat and hopeful all at once.” I wouldn’t expect something really poppy, but Everything Went Wrong is quite an unmatched record this year.

Arctic Monkeys – Teddy Picker (Single)

Genre: Post-Punk, Indie Rock
Year: 2007
Location: Sheffield, UK
Label: Domino
MySpace

01. Teddy Picker – Arctic Monkeys
02. Bad Woman – Arctic Monkeys
03. The Death Ramps – Death Ramps
04. Nettles – Death Ramps

I have one explanation for the Arctic Monkeys’ current change in music style, blame Death Ramps.

I Heart Hiroshima – The Rip

Genre: Indie Rock, Post-Punk
Year: 2009
Location: Brisbane, AU
Label: Valve Records
Myspace

01. Count Me in
02. Got Out
03. Shakeytown
04. South
05. Old Tree
06. The Corner
07. Four Sails
08. River
09. Ocean
10. Well
11. Here it Comes
12. Who I was
13. Listen

I’m not gonna lie, I was quite drawn to this band after seeing their name. Their music is very up-tempo with enthusiastic vocals and a two-guitar formula. I’ve been digging “Ocean” a lot, the vocals are extremely contagious and it gets real fun about half way through.

By Surprise/Hightide Hotel Split 7″

Genre: Post-Punk, Indie Rock
Year: 2009
Location: Philly, PA
Label: Runner Up Records
Hightide Hotel
By Surprise

By Surprise
01. Invisible Ink
02. CB Radio
03. I Miss You, etc.

Hightide Hotel
01. Shuttle
02. Elementary Biology
03. Apartment Buildings

So when my band went on tour this past August, our first show was in a basement in Columbus, OH and was labeled as the “Cute and Scary Show”. The reason behind the name was because of the mix of “cute” and “scary” bands. While the hardcore bands completely slayed, the “cute” bands brought something a little different, and one of those bands was Hightide Hotel. They played with raw emotion and held nothing back, and this split shows much of that. We stayed at the same place as these guys, and let me tell you they were the absolute nicest guys. Look out for Hightide’s group vocals and By Surprise’s “I Miss You, etc.”, the musicianship is tight and the ending vocals are priceless.

Dananananaykroyd – Hey Everyone!

Genre: Indie Rock, Post-Punk
Year: 2009
Location: Glasgow, Scotland
Label: Best Before Records

01. Hey Everyone
02. Watch This
03. The Greater Than Symbol And The Hash
04. Black Wax

06. Pink Sabbath
07. Infinity Milk
08. One Chance
09. Some Dresses
10. 1993
11. Hey James
12. Song One Puzzle

I’m not sure they are band names out there better than Dananananaykroyd…alright maybe there are. But Dananananaykroyd have created some of the best fist-pumping happy anthems of 2009. The music along with the duel vocals is an absolute assault, but the music has a very cheerful aspect to it that could make anyone smile and dance. I know for a fact that I played the hell out of “Black Wax” over the summer. The worst thing about Dananananaykroyd is that they never come to America, and/or sell things here. GET OVER HERE.

Last year, I had a phase where about all I listened to was Interpol. It seemed to fit my first year of college pretty right. So naturally, I went on a hunt to get as much Interpol music as I could. And that even led me to buying singles and EPs at CD Exchanges, Ebay, etc. Here are a few of the unique ones I was able to get.

I Was A King – I Was A King

Genre: Indie Rock, Post-Punk
Year: 2009
Location: Norway
Label: Morningside Records
MySpace

01. Still
02. Step Aside
03. Golden Years
04. A Name That Hurts To Say
05. California
06. Interlude
07. Breathe
08. Hard Luck Bad News
09. Stay Warm
10. Not Like This
11. It’s All You
12. Weighing Anchor
13. Extra Number
14. Norman Bleik
15. Fading Summer

If you remember before, I told a story about how I bought a bunch of $.50 band posters for my room. Well I also got some for a good friend of mine, and this is a band she has in her apartment! I should have kept it ;) . Norway’s I Was A King put out some Dinosaur Jr.-esqe psychedelic fuzz rock, except with shorter, catchier songs. I absolutely fell in love with “It’s All You”, probably because of the epic intro. This is one of those bands who would seriously blow up if they had the resources.

The United Sons of Toil – Until Lions Have Their Historians, Tales Of The Hunt Shall Always Glorify The Hunter

Genre: Noise, Post-Punk, Math-Rock
Year: 2008
Location: Madison, WI
Label: Sector Five/FlannelJammies
MySpace

01. The Treaty of New
02. Signing Contracts, Building Stockades
03. The Forced March of Manifest Destiny
04. White King, Red Rubber, Black Death
05. Invention vs. Innovation
06. A Spectre is Haunting Europe
07. The Irish Problem
08. Simplify, Semper Fi

Self-described as “noisy Midwestern math rock delivered by populist theoreticians,” I don’t think it could be more well said. Even though they use the words “math rock”, I feel the words “punk math rock” would be more well suited. There are some mathy riffs, but the heavy punk roots are evident in every song from the instruments to the yelling group vocals. These guys are coming through Cleveland on 10/21 at Now That’s Class, I can imagine what “The Irish Problem” will be like there.

The Nervous Jerks – Shortpants: A Spader Companion

Genre: Post-Punk, Noise
Year: 2009
Location: Youngstown, OH
Label: Dim Records
MySpace

Track list:
01. Restless/No Rest
02. Double Nothing
03. Jumping Back and Forth
04. Beat Up
05. Everything I Know
06. Flat As A Button
07. The Blankness
08. It’s Easy (You’re Fine)
09. They Turned On You
10. Just Like Dying
11. Your Oldest Friend Is A Trojan Horse
12. Stood Over
13. Less And Less And Less
14. Paper

The Nervous Jerks fuel themselves from a dying Youngstown music scene. The Nervous Jerks is the project of one man, Matthew Leicht. He has been recording for over 17 years, and is using this album as a “final hurrah” in his own words. The most impressive part of this music is the fact that he has recorded every single instrument on his own. It could be easily mistaken for a four-piece band with the full sound he projects. My personal favorites include “Beat Up” and “Less and Less and Less”, which both perfect the art of picking up and slowing down tempos.

Afraid! – Megaloklift

Genre: Post-Punk
Year: 2009
Location: Verona, Italy
Label: Holidays
MySpace

Tracklist:
01. Goa
02. Psychogoa
03. Nirvana
04. Stellar life
05. Freak
06. Kava
07. Ha, ha
08. L’ago che succhia e sputa
09. Psycho
10. Odo eye wu
11. Megalöklift
12. Sin-ti

I found this album through a friend who described it as, “sounds like At The Drive In meets Crystal Antlers.” I won’t disagree with that at all. For me, the first time I listened to “Goa”, it sounded like a spooky vampire theme song.

We Were Promised Jetpacks – These Four Walls

Genre: Indie Rock, Post-Punk
Year: 2009
Location: Glasgow, Scotland
Label: Fat Cat
MySpace

01. It’s Thunder And It’s Lightning
02. Ships With Holes Will Sink
03. Roll Up Your Sleeves
04. Conductor
05. A Half Built House
06. This Is My House, This Is My Home
07. Quiet Little Voices
08. Moving Clocks Run Slow
09. Short Bursts
10. Keeping Warm
11. An Almighty Thud

Besides from having one of the best band names in the music business, We Were Promised Jetpacks put out some damn good indie rock. For some reason, they really reminded me of Interpol on first listen, but that association quickly went away. They get really heavy, both in music and Scottish accent. “It’s Thunder and it’s Lightning” is a solid first track, and first single “Quiet Little Voices” is quite loud for a single.

Arctic Monkeys – Crying Lightning

Genre: Post-Punk, Indie Rock
Year: 2009
Location: Sheffield, UK
Label: Domino
MySpace

Tracklist:
01. Crying Lightning

This is the Arctic Monkeys’ first single off of their upcoming third album, “Humbug”. The full album actually leaked in the past couple days, but I’m not too into downloading/posting leaks. In that case, I’ll just post a great quality version of their single! “Crying Lightning” definitely foreshadows a complete change in sound for the Monkeys. They have stated that they listened to Cream and Hendrix while recorded, and it definitely shows. Alex Turner is channeling Jack Bruce through this entire song. Still a catchy tune! Honestly though, what the fuck is going on with this artwork?

Arctic Monkeys – Brianstorm

Genre: Post-Punk, Indie Rock
Year: 2007
Location: Sheffield, UK
Label: Domino
MySpace

Tracklist:
1. If You Found This It’s Probably Too Late
2. Brianstorm
3. Temptation Greets You Like Your Naughty Friend
4. What If You Were Right The First Time?

As a huge Arctic Monkeys fan myself, I love most of the releases they have put out. But I will say that this single is my favorite release. “If You Found This It’s Probably Too Late” does not start off like normal Monkeys’ songs, “Brianstorm” brings guitars like lightning, “Temptation Greets You Like Your Naughty Friend” has a sick nasty groove and an appearance by UK rapper Dizzee Rascal, and lastly, “What If You Were Right The First Time?” might have the loudest Arctic Monkey’s moment ever.
