Secret Colours, one of my favorite new acts this year, are a psych-outfit from Chicago with a sound that’s both old and new.  Out back on August 3rd, their self-titled debut is a refreshing mix of retro-psychedelia and modern-day indie rock bliss, exploding with big 3-4 minute acid pop jams from beginning to end.  This album is a must for  fans of Sweden’s Dungen or Australia’s Tame Impala.  Here’s three sweet MP3s from the debut, “Love,” “Jellybean,” and the hidden track “Popster.”  Pick up the album from their BandCamp for $10, no news on a physical release yet.

Also, here’s the oozing and shiny video for “Popstar.”

Quest For Fire – “Set Out Alone”

Genre: Stoner Rock, Psychedelic Metal
Year: 2010
Location: Toronto, Canada
Label: Tee Pee Records
MySpace

MP3: || “Set Out Alone” ||

Any regular readers here will know that I have a major sweet tooth for stoner rock, and it looks like the best place for that right now is Canada, with Vancouver’s heavy-hitters Black Mountain and Toronto’s melodic-metalheads Quest For Fire.  After Quest For Fire’s self-titled debut last year, which was a favorite of mine, they quickly return with their second album, Lights From Paradise.  The album fades in between big epic slow-jams and quick mega-riff psychedelia, which really turn out for a mind-blowing listen.  Listen/download the second track, “Set Out Alone,” a quick taste of the riffage you will experience on the album.  Light From Paradise is out on TeePee Records right now, and you can buy the LP/CD from the TP Store.

Whitesand/Badlands – “Angels on a Pinhead”/”Witch Hunting” from Seeding the Clouds

B3: Syntax Trees

How often do you see small bands releasing incredibly good 2xLPs? Quite unusual, but when they do come along, I can only hope they are as good as Seeding the Clouds.  Whitesand/Badlands is a bunch of people from Minneapolis MN creating a diverse and expansive indie rock sound that you rarely find anymore.  The 52-and-a-half minute double LP builds on their pure writing talent for soaring soundscapes,  foggy atmospheres, and everything in between.  Listen and download the first two beauties from Seeding the Clouds. For us Americans, you can order the 2LP for a super cheap price of $20, postage paid, from their website!

Herzog – Search

Genre: Indie Rock, Garage, 90s
Year: 2010
Location: Cleveland OH
Label: Transparent
MySpace

MP3: || “Silence” ||

MP3: || “Town To Town” ||

MP3: || “Paul Blart And The Death Of Art” ||

Add Herzog to the growing list of Cleveland bands having an incredible year!   Native Clevelander Nick Tolar solo bedroom project, Herzog, is set for 90s indie rock stardom. His debut album, Search, is also the debut album release of UK blog turned label Transparent, and that definitely hasn’t hurt him in terms of internet buzz.  Here’s a few tracks from the debut, including the best opening ten seconds of any song ever in “Silence,” the Dinosaur Jr.-loving mega-epic  ”Town To Town,” and the über-1990s grungy anthem “Paul Blart And The Death Of Art.”  You can buy the whole album via BandCamp for a mere $6.50, or order the 12″ LP from Pure Groove (for UKers).  For us Americans, we should see some copies via Leftist Nautical Antiques or you can pick one up at his record release show on Sept. 10th at the Happy Dog with openers Megachurch and Wombs!
