Much like a newspaper and political candidate, The Noise Is throws their full support behind Cleveland’s Mystery Of Two. I had heard much about them over the internet waves, but I had never heard their music before. So I made a trip to the record store and picked up their self-titled LP without hearing any of their music. I made an excellent call. When I first started listening to them, I wrote on my personal twitter, “Mystery Of Two sounds like a mix of Devo and Sonic Youth. I’m really liking it. Good job Exit Stencil.” They get thrown under the experimental genre, which really doesn’t make sense except for one thing, Ryan Weitzel’s voice. He throws his dramatic baritone over post-punky rhythms, along with charging shoegaze breakdowns. So more story time, a few hours before my radio show at school, my co-host bailed one me. I had enough music to make up for his absence, but I wanted to have something special in the show. So the first thing that popped into my mind was an on-air interview, and the first band I thought of was my newly-discovered trio, Mystery Of Two. So I got a hold of Ryan, and he agreed to the interview. Long story short, the interview went incredibly well, and I could not have been happier. Mystery Of Two are one of the seven bands playing the pre-Christmas holiday show at Beachland. Just one more reason to get away from your family and see some great music! Pick up this record from Cleveland’s own Exit Stencil Recordings.

Quite an interesting artist submission from San Diego. This started as something small they were putting together, but it evolved into in a full album with an interesting release technique. While they put it up for free download on their Myspace, they stated that they would be releasing a small amount of tapes with improvisational jams based on these songs. Definitely one of the more unique releases I’ve heard of. The songs themselves jump all over the spectrum of genres. I could say this sounds like Fuck Buttons, but I’d probably be very wrong on the next song. “A” struck me the most, with its heavy marching beats and twangy guitar. The reason I like this so much was because no song sounds the same, which can be a difficult thing to do these days.

P.S. Sorry I haven’t been posting much, school has been hitting me hard lately. I’ll be doing my best in the next couple weeks.

Yeasayer – Ambling Alp (Single)

Genre: Experimental, Psychedelic
Year: 2009
Location: Brooklyn, NY
Label: Secretly Canadian
MySpace

01. Ambling Alp
02. Ambling Alp (DJ /rupture & Brent Arnold remix)
03. Ambling Alp (Memory Tapes remix)
04. Ambling Alp (Instrumental)

After 2007′s incredible All Hour Cymbals, Yeasayer’s follow-up Odd Blood is one of the most anticipated releases of 2010. I got so excited when they announced their first single “Ambling Alp”, and I couldn’t hold myself back from ordering this 12″. “Ambling Alp” is already promising an excellent second LP. The song itself is layered psychedelic tribal bliss, and add DJ/Rupture to that and it only gets better.

HOLYSHITHOLYSHIT. So I know this may be outside of the realm of what I usually post, but Between The Buried and Me have stuck with me since I started listening to them last year. 2007′s Colors became a quick favorite of mine, and still is, due to its utterly flawless musicianship. And honestly, everyone can use a little prog-metal sometimes! Just from a quick listen of The Great Misdirect, they are definitely on the same track as Colors. Once I get to listen to it much more, I’ll start noticing the little things, which makes BTBAM as good as they are.

I had to refresh the page about five times, just to make sure TV Ghost were really from Lafayette, IN. In a town where everything seems lifeless, it is an unbelievable surprise to have a garage outfit, signed on the same label as Black Lips, come out of the ruins. TV Ghost’s sound is much of the garage on In The Red, but they specialize in a much more creepy tone. Just in time for Halloween!

Royal Bangs – Let It Beep

Genre: Indie Rock, Experimental

Label: Audio Eagle Records

I found out about Royal Bangs from their upcoming tour with Drummer, the side-project of Pat Carney from the Black Keys. They are not only touring with Carney, but have also released this album from his own label, Audio Eagle Records, straight out of Akron. The music is sometimes synth/guitar/bass heavy (“My Car Is Haunted”), or just up-front additive pop (“Shit Xmas”), but any of their different formulas are extremely entertaining, and are worthy of a listen.

P.S. And I just realized out of my past few posts, both I Need Sleep and Royal Bangs are out of Knoxville, TN…quite a music scene!

I Need Sleep – Welcome to Monsters

Genre: Pop, Experimental
Year: 2008
Location: Knoxville, TN
Label: Swim Slowly / Speed Tapes
Myspace

01. Super Strong
02. Don’t Come Home
03. Jelly Hammer
04. Remember Me
05. Mushy Mushy
06. Science Fire

I’m not sure I’ve heard this much energy from a 12-minutes EP before, and that’s what I think makes it so awesome. The quirkiness is off-the-scale for I Need Sleep, taking a similar sound of The Mae Shi and making it crazy flamboyant. It makes sense how these guys go insane in concert, and I think I might actually be experiencing that later this month. Support these guys on their tour with Light Pollution or throw them some cash money for their EP HERE.

Icy Demons – Miami Ice

09. Crittin’ Down to Baba’s

I’m not gonna lie, I got a creativity orgasm with Icy Demons. Add synth-riffs, heavy bass backbones, ideal awkward vocals, and video game effects, and you get about the most zany music around. It’s good to know that Icy Demons are one of those bands throwing out the idea of traditional.

11. Winter Song

For those who were saddened by the announcement that TV on the Radio would be taking a break, here is a good reason to not be sad anymore! Rain Machine is the project of Kyp Malone of TVOTR, and the formula for the music is not far off from his main band. While the sound is not much different, he does give more focus on the soft guitar ballads, which can be very pleasant. At some points, it even sounded like this was taking on a post-rock tone, listen to the 11-minute “Winter Song” for proof.

Emeralds – What Happened

Genre: Ambient, Experimental, Drone
Year: 2009
Location: Cleveland, OH
Label: No Fun Productions

Tracklist:
01. Alive In The Sea Of Information
02: Damaged Kids
03: Up In The Air
04: Living Room
05: Disappearing Ink

Another excellent C-town band right here. Emeralds bring, I believe, the most blissful music of 2009. “Alive In The Sea Of Information” sounds exactly like the name describes, and the fifteen-minute “Damaged Kids” could be taken for the beautiful soundtrack to an old 1960′s alien movie. There is definitely drone music out there that struggles with keeping people’s attention, but Emeralds does not struggle with that at all. With its dreamy synths and searing guitar tones, the delightful drones keep your ears on their toes…so to say. I’m proud to say that this Cleveland trio manages to deliver the most interesting and possibly best ambient music of the year.

Yeasayer – Wait for the Summer EP

Genre: Experimental, Psychedelic
Year: 2008
Location: Brooklyn, NY
Label: We Are Free
MySpace

Tracklist:
01. Wait for the Summer
02. Final Path

Yeasayer is one band that literally cannot be placed under any genre, experimental happens to be broad enough. I bought this 7″ from We Are Free, and got the files along with it. The version of “Wait for the Summer” is different than on their debut, All Hour Cymbals. As described by their label, it’s a “popped-out” version, while I think of it as a “campfire” version. “Final Path” is a damn interesting song. It seems like they use every sound and sample in their keyboards. Definitely keeps the theme of All Hour Cymbals.

Animal Collective – Summertime Clothes

Genre: Psychedelic, Pop, Experimental
Year: 2009
Location: Baltimore, MD
Label: Domino
MySpace

Tracklist:
01. Summertime Clothes (Album Version)
02. Summertime Clothes (Dam-Funk Remix)
03. Summertime Clothes (Leon Day AKA L.D Remix)
04. Summertime Clothes (Zomby’s Analog Lego Mix)

Picture this, you’re driving down a road, windows are down, the sun is shining, “Summertime Clothes” is blasting through the speakers. Feels right? This single couldn’t come at a better time. The original version is enough by itself, but the remixes are not bad themselves. My favorite is the Zomby’s Analog Lego Remix, but I wouldn’t even really call it a remix of “Summertime Clothes”. They just add faint background excerpts from the verses and chorus, and then add some weird-ass video game noises over it. Still really dig it though.

Them, Roaring Twenties – Future Sandwich

Genre: Math Rock, Experimental
Year: 2008
Location: Chicago, IL
Label: Sick Room
MySpace

Tracklist:
01. It’s Time For A Dip In The Secretarial Pool
02. Harry Caray Frontier Guide Hawkeye
03. We Prefer A Little Hair Down There
04. Go To: www.eeob.net/freestuff
05. Labia Arabia
06. “Fast Acting Nite-Nite Spray With Realistic Uncle Beard”
07. One Always Look Neat in a Hat Made of Meat
08. 10 Million Scientologists Can’t Be Wrong

I remember when these guys went on a small tour and stopped in Cleveland…kind of. My band played with them at a tiny venue called Club 87 in Middlefield, OH. While they were somewhat disappointed because the venue was not up to par and there were few people there, they still put people’s jaws on the floor. It is definitely some of the most obscure, yet interesting math rock I have ever heard. Just look at the song names!

Holy Fuck – Lovely Allen

Genre: Experimental, Electronic
Year: 2008
Location: Toronto, Canada
Label: Dependent
MySpace

Tracklist:
1. Lovely Allen
2. Super Inuit (Studio)
3. Lovely Allen (Riton Rerub)
4. Lovely Allen (Minotaur Shock Broadmead Redevelopment Version)
5. Lovely Allen (No Age Remix)

It’s hard for me to say a remix is better than the original song, but the Riton Rerub Remix makes a run for it.

Gang Gang Dance – First Communion

Genre: Experimental, Psychedelic
Year: 2009
Location: NYC
Label: The Social Registry
MySpace

Tracklist:
1. First Communion (Original Mix)
2. First Communion (TV on the Radio Mix)
3. House Jam (Hot Chip Remix)

“First Communion” = Great. TV on the Radio = Great. “First Communion” + TV on the Radio = Super great!
