Cleveland label Exit Stencil Recordings is set to release two great albums at the end of the summer walking into fall, with Like Bells’ Palma and the New Lou Reeds Hit Songs.  Instrumental trio Like Bells follow up their incredible self-titled from last year with a similar sound, but with the inviting surprise of vocals throughout the album.  The songs are as cohesive and strong as ever, but still in their gentle form, check out the above tracks for proof. The New Lou Reeds return from their 2006 album Top Billin’ with a bunch of boozy blues-rock tunes that would make fellow Clevelanders The Hot Rails proud. Check out the first two tracks from the upcoming album, “Headed For A Felony” and “(I’m Clearly) Rockin’ Too Hard For You.”  Both of these were pressed on random recycled color vinyl, and let me tell you, they look really really cool.  There’s some of the pretties below.  Palma is up for preorder ($15 w/ shipping) on the Exit Stencil store right now, and Hit Songs should be added soon!

Mount Carmel – Mount Carmel

02. Still Listening
03. ZZ Breakers

07. Studio Jam

Most times when people tell you their band sounds like Sabbath or early Zeppelin, you immediately think they suck. And then they tell you their album sounds like it was recorded in a dirty cellar, you basically turn off to anything they say. Mount Carmel manage to fulfill both these traits and by the grace of the classic rock gods, do not suck at all. I first heard about the Columbus power-trio Mount Carmel from the good words of Bill over at I Rock Cleveland. Upon first listen, their music easily pays homage to blues geniuses Cream, riff-gods Black Sabbath, and heavy-hitters Zeppelin. Tracks “Livin Like I Wanna” and “Still Listening” bring the blues forcefully, even sounding like Jack Bruce sat in for vocals. No joke, there’s even a John Bonham “Moby Dick”-echoing drum solo on “Hear Me Callin”. The toughest obstacle that Mount Carmel have to overcome is that sense of freshness in a genre that was popular long ago, but they successful jump that barrier and prove to be a wrecking ball of music in 2010. This was released on April 17th from Siltbreeze Records, and you can pick up the vinyl for $15 in the U.S. right HERE!

Blakroc – Blakroc

Genre: Rap, Indie Rock, Blues
Year: 2009
Location: Akron, OH
Label: Blakroc
Website

01. Coochie ft. Ludacris & Ol’ Dirty Bastard
02. On The Vista ft. Mos Def
03. Hard Times ft. NOE
04. Dollaz & Sense ft. Pharoahe Monch & RZA
05. Why Can’t I Forget Him ft. Nicole Wray
06. Stay Off The F*%$#n’ Flowers ft. Raekwon
07. Ain’t Nothing Like You ft. Jim Jones & Mos Def
08. Hope You’re Happy
ft. Billy Danze (of M.O.P.), Nicole Wray & Q-Tip)
09. Tellin’ Me Things ft. RZA
10. What You Do To Me ft. Billy Danze (of M.O.P.), Jim Jones & Nicole Wray)
11. Done Did It ft. Nicole Wray & NOE)

Mixing rap and rock usually causes headaches at the slight thought of it. But leave it to Dan Auerbach and Pat Carney of the Black Keys to actually pull it off. Blakroc is the joint collaboration of the Black Keys and multiple big rap names. Just to name a few: Mos Def, Raekwon, Ludacris, RZA, and Jim Jones who helped bring this together. I’m digging this so much right now, I can’t help but love the blend of blues beats and rap verses. Big nod to the Black Keys, these guys are having a solid year.

A super-group with Josh Homme, Dave Grohl, and John Paul Jones…this wouldn’t happen in my dreams. Somehow, by the grace of the rock gods, it came together. When the 30-sec songs clips were released, all I could say is this is heavy as fuck. It holds true, with hard bluesy riffs throughout. I think half of my excitement came from John Paul Jones, seeing him get back in the game. Back in my Zeppelin days, I used to say that JPJ was one of the most underrated musicians of all time, and it feels so good seeing him jam with Grohl and Homme. Super-groups usually fall apart, some aren’t good, but I can truthfully say Them Crooked Vultures are an excellent band without the super-group tag.
