The Noise Is is proud to present the newest record label out of Akron, OH…Stereoprize Records. Andrew from Stereoprize contacted me regarding his new-born label and first band, My Mouth Is The Speaker. While MMITS is currently busy recording their first full-length, Andrew has put their 2008 EP up for free download. Their sound is very alt-pop, and the production and vocals make for a solid EP. While this EP is young and full of energy, the bigger excitement should be regarding the wide-open future of Stereoprize Records. Still tuned for that.

Them Crooked Vultures – Them Crooked Vultures

A super-group with Josh Homme, Dave Grohl, and John Paul Jones…this wouldn’t happen in my dreams. Somehow, by the grace of the rock gods, it came together. When the 30-sec songs clips were released, all I could say is this is heavy as fuck. It holds true, with hard bluesy riffs throughout. I think half of my excitement came from John Paul Jones, seeing him get back in the game. Back in my Zeppelin days, I used to say that JPJ was one of the most underrated musicians of all time, and it feels so good seeing him jam with Grohl and Homme. Super-groups usually fall apart, some aren’t good, but I can truthfully say Them Crooked Vultures are an excellent band without the super-group tag.

Artist submission from Oregon! In my City of Sound write-up, I stated how it made me sad that solid, hard-working bands are not getting signed. For Icarus The Owl, it’s hard for me to get upset because they have nice amount of internet buzz and it wouldn’t surprise me if they got signed soon, especially after the release of this album. While their music is mostly pop-based, they incorporate many elements of math and post-hardcore into The Spotless Mind . The beginning of “The Extortionist” sports a sick mathy riff, and “La Charlière” sounds like an early TREOS song. For a three-piece band, they put out a very impressive full sound. Also, I give a nod to whoever did the production and mastering, cause it sounds clear and powerful. I’m really glad Joey from ITO got this to me because I haven’t posted much music like this, and it deserves it.

City of Sound – L’implosion

Genre: Alternative, Indie, Prog
Year: 2009
Location: Minneapolis, MN
Label: Unsigned
MySpace

01. Lunar Ticks (Mass Parading Time Bombs)
02. In The Lions Den (A Fool’s Dream)
03. Satan’s Daughter (The Flu)
04. Castle in the Sky (I dunno)
05. Black Winter (Life’s a Beach)
06. Wiser is He (That Climbs the Wisdom Tree)
07. I (Turn on)
08. II (Tune in)
09. III (Drop Out)
10. White Summer
11. Isolatened
12. Apple Cider Whiskey (is the Best)

Let’s just add another band to the list of unsigned bands who shouldn’t be. It puts me in true awe that City of Sound hasn’t gotten thrown on a label yet, they are too fucking good. Prog flows heavily through this music, but the other styles really diversify this album. It’s actually quite difficult to pinpoint their style, definitely one of the more unique bands I’ve heard this year. I remember hearing about them from a friend, who’s band played shows with City of Sound a bunch of times. I heard the demo of “White Summer”, and it fucking blew me away. The flying range of singer, Daniel Morrison, is the driving force for all of L’implosion. His vocals on most songs are incredibly impressive, with a strong but subtle voice. Take him out of the mix, and the album is average.

If have ever wanted to listen to something just because you know the guys in the band are the most genuine people, look no farther than here. I saw Man Without Wax open for Damiera, and after buying a sweet t-shirt, they gave me posters and stickers, and really expressed their gratitude. While this music might not be my music of choice, it’s very easy to listen to them and smile.
