Phantogram/Light Pollution 5/17/10 Live @ Grog Shop, Cleveland OH
Published 05/20/2010 Cleveland , Light Pollution , Phantogram Leave a CommentQuite an interesting crowd (full of nerds and wannabe hippies) filled into the Grog Shop last night for the trip-hopping indie pop duo Phantogram, and the up-and-coming Chicago shoegazers Light Pollution. To be completely honest, I dig Phantogram’s sound and all, but I went to this show to see Light Pollution. After seeing them on accident seven months ago with I Need Sleep, I have been closely following their band’s touring and upcoming debut album Apparitions. In their first show on the tour with Phantogram, Light Pollution explosively ran through songs from the debut, including one of the best tracks of the year, “Good Feelings.” After they finished, I talked to the drummer, Matt, for quite a long time, and he just seemed really grateful of the place his band is at right now. We talked of their label Carpark Records, the Chicago scene, and hopefully playing more shows in Indiana this coming school year. I spent so long talking to him that I missed out on the beginning of Phantogram’s set. They were no doubt entertaining, but somewhat disappointed me. Their music wasn’t loud enough at all, and as a duo they really don’t do much on stage. The chick played a few notes on the synths and the dude hit a few riffs on guitar, but they left the bulk of their tracks to the digitalized beats. Nonetheless, I had a really good time hanging with some old friends and seeing some vibrant young bands. Hit the jump for a sweet video of “Good Feelings” by Light Pollution and a bunch of photos.
P.S. The Phantogram video below is not very good, cause you can’t see anything. They were using a strobe light the entire show but decided for the last song not to turn it on till the end.

It’s funny how some bands fall right back into your lap after some time. Sometime last year, I drove down to Bloomington, IN with my best buddy to go see Knoxville, TN crazies I Need Sleep. After they kicked major ass, we considered leaving, but we decided to stick around for this Chicago band Light Pollution. The crowd was quiet, the stage dimly lit, and their music enveloped us like the air itself. We were breathless to say the least. So just about two weeks ago, their newest track “Good Feelings” popped up on Pitchfork, on Forkcast and some good words on The Playlist. This all leads to their debut album, Apparitions, being released on Carpark Records. Opener, “Good Feelings”, fades in perfect balance between gloomy shoegaze and sky-high indie rock, proving to be one of the best tracks of 2010 thus far. The rest of the tracks feel like rays of bright sunshine, alongside front man James Cicero’s beautiful and provocative voice. Watch for big things for Light Pollution come June, when Apparitions gets its official release. Until then, check their Myspace for some upcoming shows with Best Coast, Delorean, Memoryhouse, Keepaway, and Tanlines.
