In the time that I’ve been blogging here at The Noise Is, Ghost Mall has quickly become one of the most lively and fun bands that I’ve had the pleasure to share. Beginning with their raw Demonstrations EP, then their live bootleg Smiley Art Bootleg 10.17, all leading to their first official EP, Goons. The big difference for this EP is that it was produced by DJ Teenwolf of Ninjasonik, showing true colors for these ramshackle kids. Ghost Mall show a good amount of growth and diversity, taking their nearly perfect garage formula and turning it into something special. “40 Nugs”, “Balloon Ideas”, and “Young Liars” are the kind of songs Ghost Mall specialize in, and they have never sounded better. Perhaps the biggest surprise here is the synth-heavy “Senile Felines”, which makes an argument for best track after flowing into a rightful explosive ending. There’s really no info on a release date or what it’s being released on, but I will surely keep you updated.

Last year, I got in touch with this band called Ghost Mall, and I ended up reviewing their release, Demonstrations EP. Around a week ago, I was just browsing through my library, and I stumbled upon a live bootleg they sent to me. I felt it was good timing for more ramshackle broke-fi gunk pop. First off, the music is pretty rough around the edges but it should be, cause it’s a party! Anybody who’s ever been to a house show knows it’s loud/noisy/unrecognizable/crowded/hot, but it’s still fun as hell. This bootleg captures that essence perfectly, and I think that’s most of the reason why I love this so much. Plus, “40 Nugs” is the shit.

Ghost Mall describes themselves as a ramshackle broke-fi gunk pop gang from New Paltz, NY. They have recorded a few demos and EPs here and there, but this is their most official internet release to date. This EP may only be two songs in length, but it adds up to 13-minutes of obscurity. The bizarre 9-minute “Johnny Appleseed” is mostly a distant organ, weakly strummed guitar, and insane group vocals. Although the song doesn’t change much, its almost impossible to stop listening to. “40 Nugs” is the highlight on this EP and probably their best song. Beginning with a minute of delicate guitar and drums, Ghost Mall break into a classic garage beat filled with dancey drums and a sing-along chorus. They are going by recording with DJ Teenwolf of Ninjasonik in November and putting out a proper debut in early 2010. They also have a bootleg coming out on Friendly Neighborhood Records later this month. Keep a serious eye on these guys.
