Arctic Monkeys – “Reckless Serenade”

Genre: Brit-Pop, Indie Rock, Pop, Glam
Year: 2011
Location: Sheffield, UK
Label: Domino
MySpace

LISTEN: || “Reckless Serenade” ||

Any fan of my site over the past three years knows that I am a big Arctic Monkeys, so naturally I was excited for their new full-length, Suck It and See (despite the name). When I heard their first single, “Don’t Sit Down Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair,” it sounded big and nasty in vein of Humbug, but it wasn’t the progression I was hoping.  Well that view quickly went out the window after hearing “Reckless Serenade.”  The quaint pop song begins with a beyond-sexy bass groove, then settles into Alex Turner’s vocal and lyrically play, and give us a nice cherry on top with the most glam you’ll ever hear from the Monkeys.  The track single-handedly shows that these Sheffield kids have grown far past their early days into their most well written material to date.  Suck It and See is out now and you can order it here. And watch the video for “Don’t Sit Down…” below.

Arctic Monkeys – Cornerstone EP

Genre: Post-Punk, Indie Rock
Year: 2009
Location: Sheffield, UK
Label: Domino
MySpace

01. Cornerstone
02. Catapult
03. Sketchhead
04. Fright Lined Dining Room

I almost look forward to Arctic Monkeys’ four-song EPs as much as their albums, as many in past have been more than good. I’m glad that “Cornerstone” was the chosen single, as it is definitely one of the best tracks off Humbug. As for the b-sides, they are noticeably fun tracks with clever lyrics and dark post-punky riffs throughout. The biggest standouts are the weaving bass lines on “Catapult”, and drummer Matt Helders’ completely showing off in “Sketchhead”.

I have one explanation for the Arctic Monkeys’ current change in music style, blame Death Ramps.

Arctic Monkeys – Crying Lightning

Genre: Post-Punk, Indie Rock
Year: 2009
Location: Sheffield, UK
Label: Domino
MySpace

Tracklist:
01. Crying Lightning

This is the Arctic Monkeys’ first single off of their upcoming third album, “Humbug”. The full album actually leaked in the past couple days, but I’m not too into downloading/posting leaks. In that case, I’ll just post a great quality version of their single! “Crying Lightning” definitely foreshadows a complete change in sound for the Monkeys. They have stated that they listened to Cream and Hendrix while recorded, and it definitely shows. Alex Turner is channeling Jack Bruce through this entire song. Still a catchy tune! Honestly though, what the fuck is going on with this artwork?

Arctic Monkeys – Brianstorm

Genre: Post-Punk, Indie Rock
Year: 2007
Location: Sheffield, UK
Label: Domino
MySpace

Tracklist:
1. If You Found This It’s Probably Too Late
2. Brianstorm
3. Temptation Greets You Like Your Naughty Friend
4. What If You Were Right The First Time?

As a huge Arctic Monkeys fan myself, I love most of the releases they have put out. But I will say that this single is my favorite release. “If You Found This It’s Probably Too Late” does not start off like normal Monkeys’ songs, “Brianstorm” brings guitars like lightning, “Temptation Greets You Like Your Naughty Friend” has a sick nasty groove and an appearance by UK rapper Dizzee Rascal, and lastly, “What If You Were Right The First Time?” might have the loudest Arctic Monkey’s moment ever.
